Honoring Sacrifices and Embracing National Unity
On April 27, Party General Secretary To Lam delivered a passionate message titled “Vietnam Is One, the Vietnamese People Are One.” Reflecting on the monumental event of April 30, 1975, when the flag of liberation was raised over the Independence Palace, he reaffirmed the nation’s unbreakable spirit and the triumph of reunification after decades of hardship.
Over 30 years of resistance against colonialism and imperialism demanded unimaginable sacrifice. Millions of lives were lost, families devastated, and cities reduced to rubble. Yet, through unwavering determination, the dream of a unified Vietnam remained steadfast.
To Lam vividly recalled the powerful images of mothers sending their sons to war, children growing up amid gunfire, and the courage of soldiers, youth volunteers, and guerilla fighters. “The April 30 victory was the culmination of a nation’s indomitable will, the blood and sacrifice of millions, and an unbreakable belief in reunification,” he wrote.
Healing Wounds and Building a Forward-Looking Future
The Party Chief acknowledged the deep scars left by warāphysical, emotional, and environmentalāthat still burden many Vietnamese. Even generations born after the guns fell silent live with the consequences.
However, he emphasized that the Vietnamese people, guided by compassion and forgiveness, have moved beyond the pain. The policy of national reconciliation has been a strategic, long-term vision, fostering unity among all Vietnamese, regardless of past divisions or global residence.
“Every Vietnamese, wherever they live, whatever side of history they were once on, shares a common root, a common love for our homeland,” To Lam declared.
Through his travels, he recounted moving encounters with overseas Vietnameseāsuccessful entrepreneurs, skilled workers, artists, and young professionalsāwhose pride in their heritage remains unshaken. Even former soldiers from opposing sides have found reconciliation, mirroring the transformation of former enemies like Vietnam and the United States into comprehensive strategic partners.
Seizing Opportunities in a Rapidly Changing World
To Lam urged the nation to recognize that independence and reunification are not end goals, but starting points for a new journey toward national greatness.
In a world marked by rapid and unpredictable change, Vietnam must remain resilient and proactive. “We cannot let the country fall behind. We cannot let the nation miss its opportunities. We must not repeat the cycles of history,” he warned.
This requires building a self-reliant, innovative economy; modernizing national defense and security; creating an efficient, streamlined political system; and fostering a united, cultured, and humane society.
Above all, he stressed that national interests must come before short-term achievements or individual gains.
To Lam called on all Vietnameseāincluding the global diasporaāto contribute through knowledge, creativity, patriotism, and civic responsibility. In the digital age, every Vietnamese citizen, wherever they are, plays a vital role in the countryās development.
A Call for Long-Term Vision and Collective Responsibility
Highlighting lessons from other successful nations, To Lam emphasized that sustainable development requires consistent, long-term planning. “Urban planning is a promise to the future,” he wrote. “If we constantly change it, we lose the people’s trust.”
He urged government leaders, officials, and all citizens to honor the legacy of past sacrifices by building a vibrant, powerful, and respected Vietnam on the world stage.
As the nation commemorates 50 years of reunification, he left a resonant message: “Our future actions must be worthy of the blood shed and the sacrifices made. We must act for the nation’s enduring interests, not for fleeting success.”
